In 2017 the Australian government established a royal commission into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial services industry. The commission was spawned in the wake of an exposé widely covered in the media in which Australia’s largest banking institution was revealed as being dominated by a sales-driven culture that pursued profit at all cost, and identified fraud scandals that left thousands of the bank’s customers millions of dollars out of pocket. The commission implicated nearly all of Australia’s major financial institutions, and esteem in the finance sector plummeted as poor financial planning and governance were shown to be widespread and everyday practice.
Rhizome is a small but dedicated and experienced team of independent industry leaders in the field of advising financial services institutions, with a unique blend of regulatory and practical perspectives that affect risk management outcomes and risk culture. They have experience working with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), but in the post-Royal Commission environment decided that they could better service the industry and bring about effective change by forming their own independent advisory group.

Rhizome’s aim is to bring about positive and meaningful change in financial institutions’ risk management frameworks, and across the sector as a whole - similar to the way a rhizomatic root system spreads out beneath the surface of the soil. We worked closely with Rhizome’s leadership team through workshops in order to distill what their vision for a better, more responsible financial future looked like, as well as how they aimed to bring this about.

Our visual identity starting point was researching poetry movements and conceptual art from the 1950s and 60s crafted on typewriters. The brand idea is about revealing forms and patterns to represent the way Rhizome makes connections across an institution to reveal and illuminate patterns of risk. We created custom brand illustrations using a typewriter, and applied them to a pared back mid-century inspired colour palette that paid homage to the paper-based history of corporate culture and stationery.
Our brand positioning for Rhizome differentiated them from other advisory groups operating in the same sector by placing the focus on their unique ability to to help financial institutions gain a better oversight of their risk and governance frameworks by partnering with the institutions to spot connections and identify patterns and trends across all levels of their business. In other words: Rhizome sees what others either overlook or aren’t equipped to notice.

It's a human system, therefore things go wrong. Sometimes things go wrong through dishonesty. Sometimes things go wrong because of neglect, carelessness, or just sheer coincidence.
